I have had a droid x for 2 months now. I got it for 2 reasons: work and play. For work, I need it so that I can have access to my google calendars, and, more importantly, so I can access the internet and my client files (my practice is cloud based.) I went in front of a judge without access to my client records one too many times and decided I needed that access. So, I got the phone.
CRASH!
The problem with it is it crashes 3 out of 4 times when I use tethering (using my phone as a wi-fi hotspot.) If it were a PC, I would be getting the blue screen of death all the time! That's right, when I say crash, I mean my phone literally resets itself. *sigh*
WOW!
Despite the negativity and occasional crashing, this is my first smart phone of any kind, and it is wonderful! I can look anything up any time anywhere. I have a gps device. I can calendar in any situation. I can check all my messages whenever I want (although I find this means I think about work more than I would like.) In fact, this phone does more than I will ever use.
WHAT ABOUT THE KIDS?
As adults, cell phones are amazing. They cost about as much as a land line, but they give us immediate communication wherever we are. We can call for help when we need it. We can meet up with people once we get to a place. It is terribly convenient.
But what about the kids? I remember as a child simply calling my friends on the phone to see if they were home and if they could play. Now, without land lines and parents (rightly) not giving their children cell phones, they can't call up their friends. They either have to be out and about trying to find a friend that can play, or they have to hope that their parents know their friends' parents' phone numbers, borrow their parent's phone, call their friend's parents, and ask to talk to their friend. It seems like a lot of steps just to play with a friend.
Well...there you have a rant, rave, and remember. Not a great one, as I have several distractions this morning, but...
